3 December 2009: Club End of Season Celebrations... Lithuanian style

As we approach the final club event for the year, our presentation night, its worth reading how they run this event in Vilnius. Roving bendigo correspondent Evan Barr has just arrived in Vilnius in time for the local end of season celebration. Here is his AttackPoint report.

"Indre's orienteering club breakup tonight out in the countryside, arrived pretty late and it seemed everyone was waiting for us to start their annual(weekly?/monthly? im not sure) club beer/vodka-o...there was a lot of lithuanian being spoken and i couldnt really worked out what was going on but before i knew it i had been tied to some poor girl, had a beer and shot of vodka poured down my throat and had been sent out into the forest with a map to do a three-legged night-o while being half cut... pretty good fun.. nearly got a kidney stone by the end though, couldnt work out how to say "can we please stop for a bit, im busting for a piss, ay" in lithuanian, to the girl i was tied to."

Our local event will be tame by comparison.

2 May 2009: Space Racing warm up event

The 1st event in this years Space Racing was held on Saturday at the Kangaroo Flat Botanical Gardens. Teams representing Schools from the Bendigo area turned up for Registration, and to trial the latest in electronic timing. SportIdent (SI) will be used at all events this year, and today was a opportunity for all competitors to get use to using it.

The 1st race will be next week, Saturday 9th May at the same location as it was for the Warm up, Kangaroo Flat Botanical Gardens. Competitors are asked to be there at 10:00 for a 10:30 start. Event runs for 30 mins, so it will be all over by 11:00.

Any teams that couldn't get to the warm up event, and want to run next week can contact Jim Russell on 0411 125 178

6 March 2009: Planning under way for the 2009 primary schools orienteering competition

Following on from the success of the inaugural series of the primary schools orienteering competition in 2008, won by Specimen Hill Primary School, planning is under way for the first series for 2009, starting on 2nd. May. We hope to increase the number of schools competing. If you think your school would be interested please contact Jim Russell (ph. 0411 125 178) or Peter Creely (5443 1975). Competitors must be under 12 years of age and attending primary school.

These races are a little different to the normal orienteering race: the maps are in suburban park areas close in to the city and cover a smaller area. Usually several controls are visible from the start/assembly area. Competitors run in pairs and can be seen navigating through much of the course; parents and other interested onlookers can chart the progress of their school teams. Further information will be posted as our planning develops.

13 February 2009: Sportident At Local Events: It's easier than you think!

Most of our club events this year will use sportident electronic timing. Instead of carrying a punch card, you will carry a SI card (finger stick) to insert at each control into the control box. The control box will be located on the top of a stand with the flags hanging off these. Not only will this streamline the time recording task for the organiser, it will also give you a print-out of times between each control.

For the organiser: The only change will be that you will use control stands with the flags attached instead of tying a hanging the control around a tree. The stands are lightweight and the control boxes will remain attached to the stand. There are lockable plates for insecure sites. No computers are needed. All you will need is the start and finish control stands, and the down-load station that will print out the time slips.

Registration: The same procedure will apply, but instead of filling out your details onto a punch card, we will have a registration sheet with provision to record the SI card number (printed on the stick). We need this number to collate the results after the event, so even if you have your own stick, you will still need to record this number. We also need to know this number in case you forget to hand it back at the end of the event.

SI Cards: Will be available and free to hire for the first 2 months (until the beginning of May) so that everyone becomes familiar with their use and to allow you time to renew membership and purchase your own. However, because they are expensive for the club to buy, we will have to charge a $4 hire fee from 1st May. We encourage everyone to purchase and use their own SI cards and are available to all club members at the subsidized price of $55 each. They can be initialized with your name, which will then print out on your results slip.

Finish Time: You will still need to place a time stub on the start board as usual. After you have finished and obtained your print-out, we would like you to record your times on the stub and place in order on the finish board. Again this will greatly reduce the workload on the organiser.

Note for course setters: Lockable controls number 30 – 39. Stands from 40 – 69

1 February 2009: You can now update your events details on the web!

The new events section of the web site is nearing full functionality. Club members with a log-in for the web site can now add or update details of events. Instructions can be found in the help menu on the left hand side.

12 October 2008: Bendigo Adventure Series

Bendigo Orienteers will be organising the Bendigo Adventure Series, an orienteering competition open to all primary schools in the Bendigo area. The first event will be a familiarisation event on the 25 October, followed by 6 point scoring events each Saturday thereafter, two on each of three maps. Each team will be made up of 4 members -- 2 girls and 2 boys; age limits do not apply other than team members must be at primary school. The maps will be park/street maps close to Bendigo. There will be 10 controls and each team has thirty minutes to visit as many as possible in any order. The winning school will receive a cheque for $100.00 with each team member receiving a gold medallion.

In 2009 there will be three series, one in each term.

The competition is part of Bendigo's effort to support the VicHealth Linking Project. The aim of this project in the Bendigo Region is to increase young people's participation in all levels of community sport and active recreation. Jim Russell is the Project Officer for the Project. He is a local orienteer and his part of the Project is to go into schools and assist with the creation of opportunities for students to participate in orienteering. Jim is an accredited Level 3 Coach and has a long history of taking Australian Senior and Junior teams to international success. Jim can be contacted on Ph. 0411125178, or e-mail: jymbo @ dodo.com.au

2 October 2008: Adventure Series for Primary schools starting soon

Bendigo Orienteers will be introducing an Adventure Series for Primary schools. It is the first schools series involving Bendigo Primary schools to be held here. The first event will be on Saturday (morning) 25 October and will take the form of a familiarisation event to demonstrate the format to be followed. Electronic punching and time recording will be used. The next six events will be scoring events for those schools involved.

The winning school over the six events will receive a cheque for $100.00 and each team member will receive a gold medallion. The maps will be forest park areas close to Bendigo. Three 6 event series are planned for 2009.

For further details contact Peter Creely on ph. 5443 1975, or e-mail luddcreely@aapt.net.au as soon as possible.
